What’s Update Germany?

My name’s Maurice Frank. I’ve been producing English-language media about Berlin and Germany since … forever. I worked here and here. I co-founded this magazine. I attempted to launch an English Edition at a local newspaper.

And I’ve been writing the English-language newsletter 20% Berlin with recovering financial journalist and stand-up comedian Andrew Bulkeley since 2021.

20% Berlin has grown a large, loyal audience so I thought I’d try something similar for Germany as a whole with Update Germany.

I know the name is a little generic. But I like it because it suggests that Germany needs an update. And it accurately describes the product. Here what you can expect:

• Monday to Friday, I obsessively consume German media so you don’t have to.

• Every week, I select the most important or interesting German stories in politics, business, culture etc.

• I boil them down to the essential info.

• Throw in a dash of humour or snark where appropriate.

• Season the stew with random observations, photos, discoveries, links etc.

• Email it to you, free-of-charge, every Saturday morning.
